Rubens's unique sketch The Apotheosis of James I and other studies: sketch for the ceiling of the Banqueting House, Whitehall 1628-30, which has been added to the Tate Collection, thanks to efforts of the Tate Trustees. The sketch of 17th century London,depicts James I,father of Charles I, who was executed outside Banqueting House in London's Whitehall!
Artist Rooms is new collection of international contemporary art from a imaginative gift from Anthony d’Offay to the Tate.
Simon Sainsbury gifted 18 outstanding paintings from the 18th to the 20th century, to be shared between the National Gallery and Tate.
Joseph Mallord William Turner, The Blue Rigi, Sunrise 1842, Watercolour on paper was acquired by the Tate in 2007.Tate Members and the largest ever allocation from Tate's acquisitions endowment fund were pivotal in this acquisition.
In 2005, this Reynolds picture The Archers was the first ever purchased by Tate. The iconic double portrait fills a significant gap in Tate's Reynolds holdings. The acquisition of such major historic British pictures is critical to Tate’s ability to promote British art.
Henry Tate Collection
Sir Henry Tate (1819-1899) made his fortune from sugar which he used to buy paintings by living British artists which he offered to the nation. In 1892 Sir Henry Tate offered to build a gallery for British art which was was opened on Millbank in 1897 and soon became known as the Tate Gallery.
In 1996 Janet Wolfson de Botton presented 60 contemporary works to Tate and these were exhibited at Tate in 1998. The gift includes paintings, drawings, sculptures and photography by thirty artists. With this gift, Tate was able to strengthen its representation of such artists as Carl Andre, Richard Artschwager, Gilbert & George, Richard Long and Cindy Sherman.
In 1970 Lord McAlpine presented to the Tate 60 recent sculptures by David Annesley, Michael Bolus, Phillip King, Tim Scott, William Tucker, William Turnbull and Isaac Witkin. The acquisition of these works significantly strengthened Tate's holdings of 1960s abstract sculpture.
