Moher comes from old Gaelic - ‘Mothar’ which means ‘the ruin of a fort’. A fort which was demolished in the early 1800s during the Napoleonic Wars.
The awesome Cliffs are very popular with eloping couples who come from all over the world – the Irish diaspora in North America & Australasia which resulted from the Irish Famine in the late 1840s.
Extending over 5 miles the sheer 700 feet Cliffs of Moher are the most iconic rugged coastal features in Europe with outstanding views of the Aran Islands: Inis Oírr, Inis Méain and Inis Mór, Galway Bay, Twelve Pins & Connemara’s Maumturk Mountains.
Cornelius O’Brien, related to the first High King of Ireland Brian Boru, built a tower in 1835 & named it after himself (!) to encourage tourism & optimise the view of this awesome natural feature.
Let the awesome presence of the Cliffs be the launching pad of your life together.
Elope to the Cliffs of Moher!
